Feedback is an important part of assessment. That is why we have provided you with multiple options when it comes to providing feedback. This helps make sure that it has the impact you want and that the time you invest in composing the feedback doesn't go to waste. Let's get started.

Note: Feedback options are only available when adding an assessment task/activity through the Add or Import option.

Types of Feedback

There are two main types of feedback you can use with the Gradebook when adding an assessment task/activity. Both types of feedback work independently of each other but can also work great when used together. The two types are;

  1. Class Feedback

  2. Learner Feedback

Class Feedback

This is feedback that is visible to every learner in your class. If you decide to also use Learner Feedback, it will be displayed right next to it. This is useful if you want to give overall general feedback to the class on how they performed in the assessment. It also removes the need for you to include it each time when using Learner Feedback.

Learner Feedback

Learner feedback is provided to each individual learner and is only visible to that learner. It is never visible to anyone else in the class. If you decide to also use Class Feedback, then the Learner Feedback will be displayed right next to it. You do not need to provide feedback to every learner in the class when using this feature.

How to Provide Feedback

First, make sure you are on the Dashboard and then click on the Add Gradebook button. Select the Add or Import option from the menu to display the selection screen.

Select Task / Activity as the assessment type you want to add. Then click Next to display the Add Gradebook screen.

Class Feedback

Check the Class Feedback option to display the field. You can simply type your feedback to the class in the field provided. This will be visible to all learners.

Learner Feedback

Check the Learner Feedback option. This will display an Add button under the Feedback column next to each learner. Click on the Add button to display the Feedback screen.

Provide feedback to the learner by typing it directly in the textbox. You can format your feedback by using the toolbar such as highlighting important points. When you are done providing learner feedback click the Ok button.

The button will change to View indicating that you have already provided feedback to the learner. You can click on the View button to review your feedback. You will also notice that an indicator will appear in the Feedback column heading to show how many learners you have provided feedback to.

Using Feedback with Grades

You can use both Class Feedback and Learner Feedback along with a grade. However, there are additional scenarios available to you that help emphasise the importance of feedback to your learners.

Learners are sometimes drawn towards the grade and depending on their results, they may not take on board the feedback. This can also be said of the class where you are trying to improve their overall performance and again, the grade may hinder what you are trying to achieve.

This is where you have a couple of additional options available that you may like to consider.

Hide Grades

This allows you to provide a grade but hides it from the learner. It is visible to you in the Gradebook and is included in performance metrics. However, it is not visible to the learner. Only the Class Feedback or Learner Feedback is visible.

This is particularly helpful when you have done an assessment, provide constructive feedback on how to improve, and plan to repeat the assessment later with your class. This way, you can hide the grades and let them know you will only reveal the grades after the second assessment. This may help encourage them to consider the feedback you have provided.

You can use the Hide Grades option and later edit the Gradebook to uncheck this option. Only then will the grade be visible to the learner.

Provide Feedback Only (No Grades)

You also have the option of providing feedback only. This means that you can remove the need to provide a grade. This can be done by changing the grading scale to No Grade.

Simply click on the Percentage column heading. This will display the Grade Scale Selection screen.

Here you can choose No Grade from the available options in the drop-down menu. Click the Select button to save your changes.

This will remove the need for you to provide a grade. You can simply provide feedback.

Note: You will not be able to uncheck the Learner Feedback option until you change the grade scale to an option other than No Grade
